Church Along the Shore by FicktionPhotography Church Along the Shore by FicktionPhotography
Notre Dame Cathedral is a church that serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Papeete in the French Polynesian island chain.  It is located close to the waterfront esplanade of the city on the rue du Général de Gaulle.  It opened in 1875 and has stood as one of the last remaining examples of early colonial architecture and the island's past.  Wandering around the island before I scuba dove off of it, I nearly got lost.  Many of the buildings look similar and most pedestrians were either of no help or didn't speak English.  Thankfully, most of the shop owners did and were more than helpful getting me back to the docks.  © 2012-2014.

It looks tiny, among the modern buildings.  I'll bet it wasn't small at all in 1875!

Not many buildings in Papeete were large, but there are definitely ones several floors tall.  I'm with you, back in 1875 it was probably a landmark, and a tall one at that.
